One other beginner tip (from a genuine beginner!): If you have lights controlled by relays, go to settings/devices and services/entities, click on the icon at the left of the entry for the switch in the list, click on the gear and change ‘Show as’ from ‘switch’ to ‘light’. On my system, this created a new light entity linked to the original switch entity and hid the switch (presumably so any automation already using the switch would still work). This allows for example table lights on smart plugs to be in Groups with smart bulbs and allows light-only actions like ‘toggle’. Previous systems I’ve used have done this during onboarding of the device, but HA does not and you want to do this step before you create automations using it as a switch.

  2. Great video. Will save it for when i can navigate HA better. I don’t think “beginner” means what you think it does.
